Online harassment and abuse checklist

Use it when

a high-profile moment is coming up, or a colleague is being targeted.

Watches the accounts and keeps the record
Reports posts
Speaks for the organisation
Checks on the person

Before it happens

Privacy tightened, and work and personal accounts kept apart.
Two-factor on every account, with an app or a key.
Report and block options found on every platform you use.

If it happens

Threats of violence, or details out? Safety first: use the Details posted online playbook.
Someone else keeps the record, before anything is blocked.
Don’t engage the attackers in public. The person targeted chooses their approach.
Answer a smear calmly, with one factual correction on your own channels.
Police or a lawyer only where it’s safe, and the person agrees.

Notes

Take care: Start by believing them. Tell them they're not alone, and that it isn't their fault.
