Use it when

someone is about to travel, cross a border or go where devices might be taken.

Before you go

Know the rules where you’re going: VPNs, encryption, password demands.
Carry less. Back up the rest and delete it from the devices you take.
Lock everything down: updates, encryption, a PIN of at least six digits, no fingerprint or face unlock.
A trusted VPN installed before you leave.
Check-ins agreed: who, how often and what a silence means.

At the border

Logged out of email and social media, and sensitive chats cleared.
Devices switched off before you get there.
Decided in advance what you’ll do if asked for a password.

If a device went out of your sight

Stop using it for sensitive work.
Ask a helpline to check it.
Change the passwords of the accounts that were on it.
